Most people need between 2 and 4 hypnotherapy sessions to overcome a fear of flying. The exact number depends on how severe your aviophobia is, how long you’ve had it, and whether you have other related anxieties.
If your fear is mild (you can fly but feel anxious), you might see results in 2 sessions. If you’ve avoided flying for years or have panic attacks at the thought of boarding a plane, you’ll likely need 3 to 4 sessions.
What happens in each session
The first session lasts around 90 minutes. We’ll talk about when your fear started, what specifically triggers it, and what you want to achieve. This might be a specific holiday flight or simply being able to travel without dread.
I’ll explain how your brain has learned to respond to flying with fear, and how hypnotherapy retrains that response. Then we’ll do the hypnotherapy itself, which involves deep relaxation and guided visualisation. You’re always in control and aware of what’s happening.
Follow-up sessions are usually 60 minutes. We build on the previous work, using different techniques to strengthen your confidence and reduce anxiety. Each session targets specific aspects like turbulence, take-off, or confined spaces.
Why 2 to 4 sessions is typical
Your brain needs time to consolidate new patterns. Hypnotherapy isn’t a single magic fix. It works by repeatedly guiding your subconscious to respond differently to flying.
After the first session, many clients notice they can think about flying without the same level of panic. By session two or three, they’re visualising themselves on a plane calmly. By the final session, they’re mentally rehearsing the entire journey with confidence.
Spacing sessions 1 to 2 weeks apart works well. This gives your mind time to process the changes between appointments while maintaining momentum.
Factors that affect how many sessions you need
If your fear developed after a specific bad experience (severe turbulence, emergency landing), it often responds faster than a longstanding phobia with no clear cause.
People who’ve avoided flying completely for many years may need more sessions because there’s no recent positive reference point. Those who still fly but suffer through it usually progress more quickly.
Related fears make a difference too. If you also have claustrophobia, fear of heights, or health anxiety about having a panic attack, we need to address these alongside the flying fear. This doesn’t always mean extra sessions, but it does affect the approach.
Your readiness matters. Clients with an upcoming flight often progress faster because they have a clear goal and strong motivation. The pressure can actually help.
What if I need more than 4 sessions
Some people do need 5 or 6 sessions, particularly if the phobia is very severe or there are multiple overlapping anxieties. We’ll assess progress as we go.
You’re never locked into a set number. After 2 sessions, you’ll have a clear sense of whether it’s working and how much further you need to go.
Sessions cost £90, and you book them as you need them rather than paying upfront for a package. This means you’re in control of the pace and cost.
Between sessions: what you should do
I’ll give you a recording after each session to listen to at home. Playing this daily reinforces the work we do in person and speeds up results.
Some clients practise the relaxation techniques while watching plane videos on YouTube or when they’re in situations that usually trigger mild anxiety. This real-world practice is valuable.
You don’t need to force yourself onto a plane between sessions unless you have a flight booked. Mental rehearsal during hypnotherapy is enough to create change.
Success rates with 2 to 4 sessions
Most clients who complete 3 or 4 sessions go on to take their planned flight without significant anxiety. Some still feel a flutter of nerves during take-off, which is normal, but the overwhelming fear is gone.
The key is following through with all recommended sessions. Stopping after one session because you feel better in the room doesn’t give your brain enough reinforcement. The real test is maintaining that calm when you’re actually at the airport.
Booking your sessions
If you have a flight booked, start hypnotherapy at least 3 to 4 weeks before you travel. This gives time for 2 to 3 sessions with proper spacing.
For flights more than 2 months away, you have more flexibility to space sessions out. For very urgent travel (flight in under 2 weeks), intensive sessions closer together can still help, though results may be more variable.
All sessions are conducted over Zoom, which means you can fit them around work and family commitments without travel time. Most people find this more relaxing than visiting a clinic.
The first step is a free informal chat where we discuss your specific situation and I can give you a more tailored estimate of how many sessions you’re likely to need.
