How Long Does Fear of Flying Treatment Take?

Most people complete fear of flying treatment in 2 to 4 sessions. The exact number depends on how severe your anxiety is, whether it’s linked to other fears, and how quickly your mind responds to hypnotherapy.

If you have an upcoming flight, you can often see significant improvement within 2 to 3 weeks. Many people book treatment once they’ve booked a holiday, giving themselves enough time to address the fear before departure.

What happens in the first session

Your first session focuses on understanding what triggers your fear. For some people, it’s the feeling of being trapped. For others, it’s turbulence, take-off, or a lack of control.

We’ll explore when the fear started. Sometimes it began with a specific flight. Other times it developed gradually or appeared after a stressful period in your life.

This session also includes an initial hypnotherapy technique to start reducing anxiety. You won’t leave without beginning the actual work.

How quickly you’ll notice changes

Many people feel calmer about flying after the first session. The constant worry often reduces, and intrusive thoughts about the flight become less frequent.

By the second or third session, you’re typically able to think about your flight without the same level of physical anxiety. Your breathing stays steady. Your heart rate doesn’t spike.

The goal isn’t to make you love flying. It’s to get you on the plane feeling calm enough to travel without distress.

Why some people need more sessions than others

If your fear is connected to panic disorder or claustrophobia, treatment may take longer. We need to address the underlying anxiety pattern, not just the flying aspect.

People who’ve avoided flying for many years sometimes need extra sessions. The longer you’ve reinforced the fear by avoiding planes, the more work is needed to retrain your response.

If you’ve had a traumatic experience on a flight, such as severe turbulence or an emergency landing, we’ll need time to process that memory properly.

The timeline for upcoming flights

If your flight is in 4 to 6 weeks, you have enough time for a full course of treatment. We can schedule 3 sessions with space between each one for your mind to integrate the changes.

For flights in 2 to 3 weeks, focused treatment is still effective. We prioritise the techniques that reduce immediate anxiety and give you practical tools for the journey.

If you’re flying in less than 2 weeks, hypnotherapy can still help, but expectations need to be realistic. You may not eliminate the fear entirely, but you can reduce it enough to get on the plane.

What treatment actually involves

Hypnotherapy for fear of flying uses a calm, focused state to change how your mind responds to flight-related thoughts. You remain aware and in control throughout.

We work on separating the physical anxiety response from the situation of flying. Your body has learned to panic at the thought of being on a plane. Treatment helps it learn a different, calmer response.

You’ll also learn self-hypnosis techniques you can use before and during the flight. These give you a way to manage any remaining nerves without relying on medication or alcohol.

Sessions are remote and flexible

All sessions happen over Zoom, which means you can fit them around work and family commitments. You don’t need to travel anywhere or sit in a waiting room. (I do also offer in person sessions in Shipston for anyone who prefers in person sessions.)

Sessions last around 60 minutes. Most people book them weekly, though you can schedule them closer together if your flight is approaching quickly.

Sessions cost £90, and most people invest between £180 and £360 for a full course of treatment. That’s a small amount compared to the cost of missing a holiday or avoiding travel for years.

How to know if it’s working

You’ll know treatment is working when you can picture yourself on the plane without your chest tightening. When you check in online and don’t feel dread. When you pack your suitcase without intrusive thoughts about the flight.

Some people test their progress by watching videos of flights or visiting an airport. If these activities feel manageable, you’re ready.

The ultimate test is the flight itself. Most people are surprised by how calm they feel during boarding and take-off. The anxiety they expected doesn’t arrive, or it’s much weaker than before.

What to do if you have a flight booked

Don’t wait until the week before to seek help. The earlier you start treatment, the more time your mind has to absorb the changes.

Book your first session as soon as you know you’ll be flying. Even if your flight is months away, starting early means you’ll feel confident and calm well before departure.

If your flight is very soon, contact me anyway. Last-minute treatment is still worth doing and can make a significant difference to your experience.
