What Happens During a Fear of Flying Hypnotherapy Session?

If you’ve been considering hypnotherapy for your fear of flying, you’re probably wondering what actually happens when you book a session. The process is straightforward, evidence-based, and nothing like the stage hypnosis you might have seen on television.

Most people feel nervous before their first session. That’s completely normal. Understanding what to expect can help you feel more comfortable about taking this step.

The Initial Consultation (15-20 Minutes)

Your first session begins with a conversation. I will ask about your specific fear of flying. Some people feel anxious during turbulence. Others panic at the thought of being enclosed in the cabin. Many feel their heart race during takeoff or landing.

We will discuss when the fear started and what triggers it. This isn’t psychotherapy or deep analysis. I need to understand your experience so your sessions can be tailored to your particular pattern of anxiety.

We will also talk about your goal. Perhaps you have a family holiday booked, a work trip abroad, or you simply want the freedom to travel without dread. Being clear about what you want to achieve helps guide the work.

I will also explain how hypnosis works and answer your questions. I will reassure you that you remain in control throughout. You cannot be made to do anything against your will, and you can open your eyes and stop at any point.

The Hypnosis Process (30-40 Minutes)

You’ll sit in a comfortable chair. Some people prefer to recline slightly. You keep your clothes on and you’re awake throughout the entire process.

I will guide you into a relaxed state using my voice. This usually involves focusing on your breathing and progressively relaxing different parts of your body. Think of it as similar to a guided meditation or that drowsy feeling just before you fall asleep.

You’ll hear everything being said. You’re not unconscious or asleep. Most people describe the feeling as deeply calm but alert. Your mind might wander occasionally. That’s fine and doesn’t stop the process from working.

Once you’re relaxed, I will use specific techniques to help you respond differently to flying. This might include:

The hypnotherapist might teach you a self-calming technique you can use on the plane. This could be a particular breathing pattern, a mental image, or a physical anchor like pressing your thumb and finger together.

Some sessions include exposure work where you imagine being on a plane in increasing detail while remaining calm. This helps your brain learn that flying doesn’t need to trigger a fear response.

Coming Out of Hypnosis (5 Minutes)

I then gradually bring you back to full alertness. Most people feel relaxed and clear-headed afterwards. Some feel slightly drowsy for a few minutes, similar to waking from a nap.

We’ll have a brief discussion about the experience and what you noticed. I will explain what to expect between sessions and might suggest simple practices you can do at home.

Online Sessions Work Just as Well

Fear of flying hypnotherapy works effectively over Zoom. You’ll be in your own home, which many people find more comfortable for their first session. The process is identical to in-person work.

You’ll need a quiet space where you won’t be interrupted, a comfortable seat, and a stable internet connection. I can see and hear you throughout, and you can see me. The therapeutic relationship forms just as it would face to face.

Online sessions are particularly practical for this specific issue. You won’t need to travel, and you can book around your work or family commitments more easily.

How Many Sessions You’ll Need

Most people need between two and four sessions to feel confident about flying. The exact number depends on how severe your fear is and how long you’ve had it.

Someone with mild anxiety who flew comfortably until a recent bumpy flight might feel ready after two sessions. A person who hasn’t flown for twenty years due to intense fear will typically need four sessions.

Sessions are usually spaced one to two weeks apart. This gives your subconscious time to process the work. Many people notice a shift in how they feel about flying between sessions.

If you have a flight booked soon, you can schedule sessions more closely together. Some people book weekly sessions in the month before they travel.

What It Costs

Sessions are £90 for my specialist fear of flying hypnotherapy. I also offer a free initial phone call so you can ask questions and decide if you want to proceed.

The total investment for addressing your flying fear is usually between £180 and £360 depending on how many sessions you need. When you consider the cost of cancelled trips, the holidays you’ve avoided, or the career opportunities you’ve missed, it’s a worthwhile investment in your freedom.

What Happens After Your Sessions

The effects of hypnotherapy for flying fear are usually long-lasting. Once your brain has learned a new, calm response to flying, it tends to stick.

Some people feel immediately different. Others notice a gradual reduction in anxiety as their flight date approaches. Many report that they got on the plane feeling calm, which surprised them.

The real proof comes when you fly. Most people find they’re either calm throughout or able to use the techniques they learned to manage any nerves that arise. Turbulence, boarding, or takeoff no longer trigger the same intense physical response.

You might feel some normal, manageable nervousness on your first flight after treatment. That’s different from the overwhelming fear or panic you felt before. Many people text me from the airport to share that they’re about to board without the usual dread.

If you have an unusually stressful flight, you can book a single follow-up session for reinforcement. Most people don’t need this.

Getting Started

The hardest part is often making the decision to address your fear. Once you’ve booked that first session, the process is straightforward and surprisingly quick.

Your fear of flying has probably cost you more than you realise. Missed family occasions abroad. Career limitations. The stress of finding alternative travel routes. The disappointment of watching others take trips you’d love to take.

Hypnotherapy gives you a practical way to change your response to flying within a few weeks. Most people wish they’d done it sooner.
